I spoke to the Rest is Money podcast team - Robert Peston and Steph McGovern - about capital allocation in the UK. With so much money being frozen in assets that don’t generate growth, the effect on people’s futures is profound.
In 1279 King Edward passed the Statutes of Mortmain to lift the dead hand of the Church of the land of England and get capital flowing again. Without live money - that hires people, supports ideas, and sees business grow - an economy can’t grow. Too much of today’s economy is frozen - in government debt and housing. If we want growth, we need a new economic revolution.
